The situatedness of translation studies: The case of journalism and translation

Although translation practitioners often have the idea that the discipline of Translation Studies is characterized by an ivory tower mentality, recently there are many directions in scholarly research on translation that show how deeply situated in reality TS actually is. One of these examples is the research on the omnipresent position of translation in newsrooms. Many translation and similar linguistic transfer activities are much more present in newsrooms than journalists are often aware of. Like other selection filters in news procedures, languages seem to function as agenda setting, gatekeeping and framing factors. An interesting side effect is the role of national image setting and the way images are represented and translated in news products. This is where imagology or image studies comes in, the discipline dealing with the description of national and cultural stereotyping. This presentation will combine findings (both methodological and contentwise) of journalism studies and imagology for asking questions about Translation Studies, in particular the inter- or multidisciplinary nature of the discipline.status: publishe
