A mouse model of influenza infection was studied to help define parameters that may affect serodiagnosis of human infections by immunoassays. Antibodies to both type- and subtype-specific influenza A antigens were measured by a solid-phase immunofluorometric assay. Dilute mouse sera were added to purified influenza virus that had been covalently bound to polyaminostyrene microbeads, and the bound antibody was detected by fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled isotype-specific antisera.
