Spectra of inelastically scattered alpha particles from [superscript 40]Ca and [superscript 208]Pb have been obtained using a charge-division position sensitive proportional counter. Strongly excited bound states were observed up to 8.10 MeV of excitation for [superscript 40]Ca and up to 5.51 MeV of excitation in [superscript 208]Pb at a bombarding energy of 79.1 MeV. The excitation of a resonance ~3MeV wide in the continuum region at 18.25+-.25 MeV of excitation energy in [superscript 40]Ca was observed at a bombarding energy of 115.4 MeV.
