Typescript (photocopy).This dissertation is concerned with the study of the airline industry's transition to a deregulated environment. In this dissertation, economic literature concerning market performance in alternative regulatory environments is reviewed. From the literature review, several theoretic questions are proposed regarding the impact of deregulation upon the industry. These questions provide several hypotheses which are empirically tested. Based upon the empirical results, an explanation of airline market performance is suggested. Also, a historic development of the industry is provided in order to place the results in the proper context
