A deformation technique of controlled bending is employed, providing greater detail around the point of critical strain encountered in the strain-anneal method of grain growth in high-purity aluminum sheet. Average energy density derived from a real stress-strain curve replaces strain as the independent variable. It is found that the number of new grains produced appears to be independent of the initial grain size. Results indicate that the average energy density needed to produce at least one grain is about 3X10 ⁻² cal/mole. Exaggerated grain growth is associated with small grain-producing deformations instead of secondary recrystallization
