The role of the emotions in human life has become a subject of increasing interest for historians, psychologists, philosophers, sociologists and anthropologists. It has not been so in the field of Folklore. One subject that has been especially left unexplored has been emotionology: the attitudes or standards that a society, or a definable group within a society, maintains about basic emotions and their appropriate expression. Any emotion may be examined, but the emotional construction labeled romantic love is analyzed here.
