Prior to the work of Cannon and Bard, psychologists investigating "emotion" per se concerned themselves almost exclusively with the “conscious elements of emotional experience." Their failure to accord more than honorable mention to the profound physiological changes accompanying "emotional" states resulted in a prolonged period of largely fruitless experimentation
