The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among three areas of word knowledge: speed of word identification, accuracy of word identification, and spelling as well as the effect ability has on those three areas. The subjects for this study were 102 second grade students. The students were divided into three ability groups based on the results of their scores on the Test of Cognitive Skills. The Qualitative Inventory of Word Knowledge was used to test for speed and accuracy in word identification and accuracy in spelling.
