The purpose of this study is to examine on a case by case basis decisions in the federal courts which define the constitutional rights of public high school students. The following issues are considered: (1) freedom of speech and expression, (2) freedom of the press and student publications, (3) assembly and association, (4) search and seizure, (5) dress and grooming. These emerging student rights are protected by the First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. The constitutional rights of students have increasingly come under scrutiny by federal courts since 1967.
