The alfalfa weevil was first detected in South Dakota in Fall River County in 1936 and was found in Custer County in 1937. The insect has been collected in 18 western South Dakota counties. Damaging populations of this insect now exist in a five-county area (figure 1). Damaging populations will probably start appearing in other counties as the weevil populations increase in future years
