The fractures of dental laminates of maxillary incisors: Systematic Review

Relevance of the problem and aim of the study: The condition of the incisors has always been functionally and aesthetically relevant. With the invention of adhesive systems and the advancement of composite and ceramic materials, the use of laminate veneers have become one of the most reliable and low-invasive prosthesis method. One of the most common complications of these restorations is fracture. Although laminates have been already used for 82 years [15], there is still no unanimous recommendation which preparation design and materials to choose. Therefore, it was decided to conduct a systematic review of the literature to summarize these features to help prevent fractural complications. The purpose of this work is to collect and analyze scientific studies, investigating the fractures of maxillary central incisors’ laminates as a result of preparation geometry and a choice of restorative material. Material and methods: The search for the studies was conducted in the electronic databases subscribed to by the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences: MEDLINE (search via PubMed), EMBASE (search via Science Direct). Studies were conducted in English language, published in 2009-2020, comparing at least two preparation methods for maxillary central incisors. In total, 11 studies that met the search criteria were found. Results: Of the 11 studies selected, 8 studies [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11] investigated preparation design for ceramic laminates and 4 studies [7, 8, 9, 11] for composite laminates. Two studies compared two methods of preparation geometry [6, 11], five studies compared three methods [1, 3, 7, 8, 10], and four studies compared four [2, 4, 5, 9]. Conclusions: When compared different laminate preparation methods, W and FE methods seem to be the least reliable. Most recommended are PC and BJ methods. Due to the physical and chemical properties of the materials, the PC method is more recommended for ceramic laminates, and the BJ method is more suitable for composite laminates
