Assessment of Healthcare Workers‘ Work Ability in Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics Department of Family Medicine

Aim of study: To evaluate and to assess the need of improvement of the work of ability at the workplace of healthcare workers in Lithuanian university of health sciences Kaunas clinics Department of family medicine. Tasks: 1. To analyze workers‘ sociodemographic statistical data, occupational injuries and incidence of chronic diseases. 2. To evaluate workers‘ Work Ability Index. 3. To identify factors that determine the work ability and to assess the need of workplace improvement for better work ability. Participants and methods: All workers who agreed to participate in anonymous questionnaire survey and present at the Department of family medicine during the period of December of 2019 through January of 2020. Results: All 83 respondents were 100% able to work. 4 workers had sustained occupational injuries in the past, 3 of them feel the after effects of said injuries to this day. 49% of workers are sick with at least 1 non infectious chronic disease (NCD). Evaluated work ability of the Department of family medicine was of good quality (mean – 43,02). Workers who are sick with at least one NCD are at risk of lower level of work ability (p<0,05). Those who are sick with NCDs experience symptoms that interfere with their ability to work (p<0,05). Respondents who have acquired higher education have been shown to have better work ability p<0,05). Workers who are raising children were at higher risk of impaired work ability p<0,05). Workers who perceive their occupation as not only psychologically but also physically demanding have been shown to be at higher risk of having a lower Work Ability Index.
