The influence of the architecture of Caryocar brasiliense (Caryocaraceae) on the occurrence of spiders in the Cerrado

The configuration of the vegetation is correlated to the distribution of resources in each habitat. This way, the structural complexity of the habitat may affect the diversity of species. However, few studies have been done about the spatial or architectural properties of the habitat, although this is of great importance in the habitat selection by many invertebrates, including specially predatory animais. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the plant architecture of Caryocar brasiliense (Caryocaraceae - popular pequi) and the presence and diversity of tree spiders in brazilian savanna. The studied areas were the Reserva do Clube de Caça e Pesca Itororó de Uberlândia (CCPIU), the Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas (PESCAN) and Buriti Farm, all three inserted in the Cerrado domain. The field data were collected at dawn (5 to 7:30 a.m.) or dusk (5:30 to 8 p.m.) and the methods were manual searching and entomological tray. The spiders were conserved in 70% ethanol and the phenology of each plant was determined, through the following parameters: height of the plant, number of branches, leaves, sprouts, flowers and ffuits. The statistical analysis revealed that there is a positive correlation between the number of leaves, as well as the branches, and the number of spiders. All the others parameters did not result in significant values when correlated to the number of spiders. These results indicate that the niche segregation is more horizontal than vertical, meaning that the abundance of spiders depends less on the height of the plant and more on its architectural diversity. Since the number of flowers influences the presence of herbivores, the spiders’ preys, it is suggested that the food and hiding places availability are the main factors determining these results.Dissertação (Mestrado)A configuração da vegetação está correlacionada com a distribuição de recursos para cada habitat. No entanto, poucos estudos têm sido realizados a respeito das propriedades espaciais ou arquitetônicas do habitat, embora isto seja de grande importância na seleção do habitat por muitos invertebrados, incluindo especialmente animais predadores. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a existência de relação entre a arquitetura da planta de Caryocar brasiliense (Caryocaraceae - popular pequi) e a presença e diversidade de aranhas arborícolas no Cerrado. As áreas amostradas foram a Reserva do Clube de Caça e Pesca Itororó de Uberlândia (CCPIU), o Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas (PESCAN), município de Caldas Novas, Goiás e a Fazenda Buriti, município de Monte Alegre de Minas, Minas Gerais, três áreas inseridas no domínio do Cerrado. Os dados de campo foram coletados ao amanhecer (5:00 às 7:30) ou ao anoitecer (17:30 às 20:00), sendo utilizados os métodos manual e da bandeja entomológica. As aranhas foram conservadas em álcool 70% e a fenologia de cada planta determinada no momento do estudo, levando-se em conta os seguintes parâmetros: altura da planta, número de ramos, folhas, brotos, flores e frutos. As análises estatísticas revelaram correlação positiva entre o número de folhas, o de ramos e o número de aranhas. Os demais parâmetros não apresentaram índices significativos quando correlacionados ao número de aranhas. Estes resultados indicam que a segregação de nicho das aranhas é mais horizontal do que vertical, ou seja, a abundância das aranhas depende menos da altura da planta e mais da sua diversidade arquitetônica. Como o número de folhas influencia a presença de herbívoros, presas das aranhas, sugere-se serem a disponibilidade alimentar e de refúgio contra a ação de inimigos naturais os principais fatores determinando esses resultados
