The theoretical discourse relays in English language teaching practice

This dissertation aims at contributing to the discussions about the English teacher education, through the analysis of the relation between theory and practice in the Teaching Practice course. The starting point of this research is the hypothesis that there is a dichotomy in the relation between these two elements in the teaching practice, since the course is also structured in this way, presupposing one moment in which the theoretical knowledge is acquired and another in which it would supposedly be applied in another context. The analysis was done according to the French Discourse Analysis tradition, in order to verify the discursive relation that determine the teacher education process and the relation between theory and practice in this context. We have shown that, in the discursive game that is established in the teacher education process, the theoretical foundation is not questioned, but taken as the truth that should guide the pedagogic practice of the pre—service teacher. Results have shown that, as a consequence of this conflicting relation, the student teachers see theory and practice as separate elements, which makes them say that the theories studied in the course are not adequate to their classroom. This indicates that it is necessary to rethink the relation between theory and practice in the teacher education programs, denaturalizing the existing dichotomies so that the teacher education could be more efficient.Dissertação (Mestrado)Esta dissertação pretende contribuir para as discussões sobre a formação de professores de língua inglesa, através da análise da relação entre teoria e prática na disciplina Prática de Ensino de Inglês. Partimos da hipótese de que essas duas instâncias relacionam-se de maneira dicotômica na prática de ensino, pois o Curso de Letras também se estrutura dessa maneira, pressupondo um momento de aquisição de conhecimentos teóricos e um outro em que eles seriam supostamente aplicados em um outro contexto. A análise foi realizada segundo pressupostos da tradição francesa de Análise do Discurso, procurando verificar as relações discursivas que determinam o processo de formação de professores e a relação entre teoria e prática nesse contexto. Mostramos que, no jogo discursivo que constitui o processo de formação do professor, os fundamentos teóricos não são questionados, mas tomados como a verdade que deveria orientar a prática pedagógica do professor. Os resultados da pesquisa mostraram que, como consequência dessa relação conflitante, o aluno-professor vê teoria e prática como dois elementos distintos, o que faz com que ele, muitas vezes, afirme que as teorias estudadas no curso são inadequadas à sua sala de aula. Isto demonstra a necessidade de que a relação entre teoria e prática nos cursos de licenciatura seja repensada, desnaturalizando as dicotomias existentes para que se possa desenvolver uma formação de professores mais eficaz
