Looking for an Identity. The Patria and the Greek Cities in Late Antique Roman Empire

From the second century AD onwards, many patria were written in the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Although none of these works have survived, the mentions of them in the later tradition demonstrate the importance they had in the Greek provinces. The aim of this paper is to analyse the link between the political evolution of the late Empire and the production of patria. I argue that these literary products testify to the changes of the cities within the urban hierarchy of the eastern Empire. In particular, they show the development of the centres linked to the three capitals of the Roman east : Alexandria, Antioch and Constantinople. Indeed, the presence of the imperial court (and the resulting flow of taxes and supplies) put these cities at the centre of extended urban networks. These urbanized areas connecting the three capitals and their hinterland have been defined by Peter Brown “ corridors of Empire”. The centres entering these large-scale corridors had to justify their new position in the imperial network, and the best way to achieve the goal was linking themselves to the mythical and historical circuits of the Greek world. The patria served this purpose. While modelling the collective memory of myths, histories, and traditions of these cities, they canonized the acquired status.À partir du deuxième siècle après J.-C., de nombreux patria furent écrits dans les provinces orientales de l’Empire romain. Bien qu’aucun de ces ouvrages n’ait survécu, leur mention dans la tradition tardive démontre l’importance qu’ils avaient dans les provinces grecques. Le but de cet article est d’analyser le lien entre l’évolution politique de la fin de l’Empire et la production de patria. Je soutiens que ces productions littéraires témoignent des changement des cités à l’intérieur de la hiérarchie urbaine de l’Empire oriental. Elles démontrent notamment le développement de centres liés aux trois capitales de l’Empire romain d’Orient : Alexandrie, Antioche et Constantinople. En effet, la présence de la cour impériale (et le flux de taxes et de fournitures qui en résultait) placèrent ces cités au centre de réseaux urbains étendus. Ces zones urbanisées, reliant les trois capitales à leur arrière-pays, furent définies par Peter Brown comme des “ corridors de l’Empire”. Les centres intégrant ces corridors de grande envergure devaient légitimer leur nouvelle position dans le réseau impérial, et la meilleure façon d’atteindre cet objectif était de se relier aux circuits mythologique et historique du monde grec. Tel était le but des patria. Tandis qu’ils présentaient la mémoire collective des mythes, histoires et traditions de ces cités, ils canonisaient leur statut connu.Vanaf de tweede eeuw na Christus werden in de oostelijke provincies van het Romeinse Rijk vele patria geschreven. Geen enkele van deze werken werd overgeleverd. Desalniettemin getuigen vermeldingen van deze patria in de latere traditie van het belang dat deze teksten hadden in de Griekstalige provincies van het rijk. Deze bijdrage heeft tot doel om een analyse te maken van het verband tussen de politieke evoluties binnen het laat-antieke rijk en de productie van deze Patria. Ik beargumenteer dat deze literaire producten de verandering van verschillende steden binnen de stedelijke hiërarchie van het Oost-Romeinse rijk weerspiegelen. In het bijzonder getuigen ze van de ontwikkeling van stedelijke centra in verhouding tot de drie hoofdsteden van het Romeinse Oosten : Alexandrië, Antiochië en Constantinopel. De aanwezigheid van de keizerlijke hofhouding, met resulterende bevoorradingslijnen en geldstromen uit belastingen, plaatsten deze steden in het centrum van uitgebreide stedelijke netwerken. Peter Brown definieerde deze geürbaniseerde zones, die de drie hoofdsteden met hun hinterland verbonden, met de term “ corridors of Empire”. De stedelijke centra die toetraden tot deze grootschalige corridors dienden hun nieuwe positie in het keizerlijke netwerk te legitimeren. De beste manier om dit te doen bestond uit het inschrijven van de eigen geschiedenis in de mythische en historische circuits van de Hellenistische wereld. Voor dit doel werden Patria geschreven. Zij goten niet alleen het collectieve geheugen van mythen, geschiedenis en tradities van deze steden in een vast model, maar canoniseerden dusdoende de verworven status van deze steden.Focanti Lorenzo.
