Why cooling towers ? Open circuit cooling of thermal power stations causes river water temperature to rise considerably, e.g. 200 m3/sec heated by 15°C by four 1.300 MW nuclear generating units. The French 1964 water regulations and the guidelines established by the European Communities lay down rules for waste heat disposal and thermal power stations are gradually being built with cooling towers. This increases the number of possible sites for power stations. Installed capacities and water consumptions in the Loire, Seine and Rhône basins are surveyed.
