An overview of boundary layer modelling is presented, which focusses on the description of the model adapted and further developed by EIR for the investigation of mesoscale climatic effects of anthropogenic influences such as land-use, gaseous and particulate release and waste heat rejection into the atmosphere. Results of computer simulations are presented which illustrate the effect of a city on the thermal structure and the flow-pattern of the planetary boundary layer. An attempt was made to incorporate large stationary heat sources such as dry cooling towers into the model and results for a three-dimensional time-dependent simulation are presented. They indicate that mesoscale effects of dry cooling towers are somewhat less pronounced d...
