Simulation of effects of various heating systems using waste heat from generating plant on vegetable crop yields in greenhouses and in the open. Experiments sponsored by the French Electricity Board were run at CTIFL's Balandran centre to test the feasibility of using warm wastewater streams from power stations — especially those with cooling towers — to increase the yields of vegetable crops. Reference crops were used to compare crop yields (a) in greenhouses heated by warm reject streams, and (b) in open-air soils heated by warm water in buried pipes. The warm wastewater flows were simulated in all cases. The results show that the method of heating has different effects on the soil and air conditions and hence on crop yield and overall ec...
