A number of design problems arise with liquid metal pumps (especially for sodium), which are mainly associated with the aggressive nature of the fluids and the high temperatures at which they are pumped. Due to their nuclear applications, these pumps are of a special design and have to produce a very high output. They are also subject to special requirements in connection with cavitation noise, control of the surge pressure resulting from a sodium-water reaction and preventing the ingress of gaz into the fluid.
