Technical and economic problems arising in a choice between ground and surface water as a source of supply are discussed, especially for difficult cases where the ground water is at considerable depth or where surface water has to be conveyed over long distances. The problem of recharging an aquifer as a source of supply for a drinking water system is given particular attention. The increasing importance is stressed of geological surveys in projects providing for surface and ground water supplies both with and without aquifer recharge. Some approximate figures are given for the cost of a cubic metre of ground water from various depths and for various annual uses, and also for the cost of conveying a cubic metre of surface water over a dist...
