The most important river in the Lorraine valley, the Moselle, becomes practically unfit for domestic and, to a large extent, also industrial use due to salt (chloride) pollution during part of the year. In view of the rising demand for water in this valley, the problem required urgent action, and therefore, the necessary salinity study was run in two parts, as follows : (i) Choice of potentially feasible objectives. (ii) Choice of methods ensuring that these objectives could be achieved. Supplies of water of an average, acceptable quality could be ensured by controlling the main flows of effluent and it was found that an economically acceptable solution could be achieved with the rate of control which was finally provided for.
