Ideas on water supplies for town and country areas in multi-purpose development have changed since World War II. In France, the emphasis has been on making the maximum possible use of ground water for the purpose. In this article, the choice between surface and ground water as a source of supply is discussed in terms of the following factors : (i) Available quantities. (ii) Constancy of discharge. (iii) Available quality. (iv) Required qualitg. (v) Water prospection, storage and treatment costs.
