Among the many water desalination processes now available there are four which may certainly be expected to develop : 1. ion exchange, which is mainly suitable for final treatment, 2. reverse osmosis, which is barely out of the experimental stage but shows great promise, 3. electro-dialysis, which is particularly suitable for brackish water treatment, and g. distillation for high-capacity applications, i.e. exceeding 500-1000 c.u.m. daily. The fact that some 900,000 cu.m, of water are desalinated in the world every day proves that the processes in use are reliable, fully operational and suitable for meeting the demand for water.
