Peak snow interception by trees occurs for a wind speed of 1 m/sec. and an ambient temperature of — 1 °C, but it also depends a lot on the tree varieties and populations. Up to 15-20 mm of water can accumulate, 95 per cent of which eventually reverts to the ground. On the ground, snow most readily accumulates along forest edges, in clearings and in openings. The snow layer does not retain absolutely all its moisture in winter ; a ‘ base flow ’ of 0.6-0.8 mm daily takes place underneath the snow layer under certain conditions, which are not the same on bare ground and woodland.
