Between the Vosges and the Black Forest, the Rhine flows through the alluvium of the Alsace Plain. The river was dyked in the nineteenth century, which by shortening its course and increasing its average depth set off an extensive erosion process which it has been attempted to describe in terms of the three following relationships : (i) Meyer Peter’s relationship for saturation sediment load. (ii) A relationship defining the longitudinal load gradient. (iii) A relationship expressing the wear undergone by the sediment conveyed. A computer is required for numerical applications. An attempt has been made to use this method to predict potential erosion trends 100 kms downstream from existing and planned river training works a century ahea...
