Aerostatic fluid bearing development studies have been undertaken by the CEA and CEM with a view to their use in nuclear power plant blowers. Some results obtained with a particular aerostatic bearing are described ; characteristic features of this bearing, known as the 'Type SF', are comparatively high bearing capacity and rigidity, and low fluid consumption. This type of bearing can operate within a wide geometrical tolerance range as regards type of gas, pressure, differential pressure, rate of temperature rise, and rotational speed. Its properties allow it to run above critical speeds without difficulty ; no care is necessary as regards condition of its surfaces.
