Ground water prospection in the “Sous le Vent” region of Reunion Island. The “Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer” was instructed by the Prefect of Reunion Island to draw up an inventory of the island’s water resources, with the assistance of “Electricité de France”. The “Sous-le-Vent” region, which has a very rapidly increasing population, is affected by very serious water supply difficulties. Owing to the high permeability of the volcanic effluvium deposits forming the whole island, there is a comparative shortage of surface water. Consideration of such hydrological balance factors as precipitation, surface runoff and evapotranspiration shows, however, that much of the rain water seeps deep down into the ground, ...
