Investigations carried out in order to find radioactive water tracers able to percolate through the soil with no significant retention have led to select two isotopes, bromine 82 (half-life 30 hours) and iodine 131 (half-life 8 days), both γ emitters ; various compounds including longer half-lived γ emitters have been tested, but with a limited success only. Recent improvements of tritium measurement should lead to a rapidly increasing use of this unrivalled isotope.
