Axial units with oil-surrounded alternator rotors are used as an economical means of harnessing low-head sites with a low available discharge. The units are arranged horizontally or slightly inclined, forming part of a siphon arrangement in some applications ; their guide vane assemblies are usually of the fixed-vane type, and their shafts are mounted on two bearings. High specific discharges and speeds have been achieved with the axial flow layout, resulting in low first costs and very satisfactory even at part-load conditions.
