Pump design tendencies resulting from higher pressures and heads per impeller. The Authors show how two homothetic pumps working at the same intake and delivery conditions are in mechanical similitude, in other words, how they are subjected to the same stresses, how the strains affecting them are proportional to the pump dimensions, and the critical speeds to the rotational speeds, etc. The consequence of this is that the stresses, relative strains, etc., of two such pumps increase with pressure, so that, for a given design method, a limit is imposed to the head that can be produced by the impeller. The general tendency of increasing heads and pressures beyond these limits has produced a number of special designs and solutions which, amon...
