The effect of a tidal bore on ships’ moorings After recapitulating the main features of the tidal bore in the Seine and the way in which they were observed, it is stated that the effect of the bore on a fixed ship is analogous to that experienced by a body immersed in a fluid undergoing unsteady flow. This body is subjected to a thrust which is equal to the product of the instantaneous acceleration of the fluid and a mass equal to the amount of fluid displaced, together with an imaginary mass, whose magnitude increases as the body is less well streamlined. Starting with such theoretical considerations and accepting various simplifications the thrust exerted on the ship by the bore is calculated. Various simple cases of the motion of the ship and the forces in the moorings are examined allowing for the characteristics of the moorings. The main results of tests carried out on scale models are given as well as practical recommandations which result from this study concerning the mooring of ships likely to be subjected to tidal bores.Après avoir rappelé les caractéristiques essentielles du mascaret en Seine et la manière dont elles ont été observées, on indique que son effet sur un navire maintenu immobile est analogue à celui subi par un corps immergé dans un fluide en mouvement varié. Ce corps reçoit une poussée égale au produit de l'accélération instantanée du fluide par une masse égale à la somme de la masse du fluide déplacé et d'une masse fictive d'autant plus forte que le corps est plus mal profilé. Partant de ces considérations théoriques, on évalue en acceptant diverses simplifications la poussée exercée par le mascaret sur un navire. Compte tenu des caractéristiques des amarres, on examine dans divers cas simples le mouvement pris par le navire et les efforts supportés par les amarres. On donne les résultats principaux d'essais sur modèle réduit effectués et les recommandations pratiques qui découlent de la présente étude pour l'amarrage des navires susceptibles d'être soumis au mascaret.Banal Michel.
