The effect of a tidal bore on ships’ moorings After recapitulating the main features of the tidal bore in the Seine and the way in which they were observed, it is stated that the effect of the bore on a fixed ship is analogous to that experienced by a body immersed in a fluid undergoing unsteady flow. This body is subjected to a thrust which is equal to the product of the instantaneous acceleration of the fluid and a mass equal to the amount of fluid displaced, together with an imaginary mass, whose magnitude increases as the body is less well streamlined.
