A large part of the silting up of big reservoirs is produced by the “mud lake” with an almost horizontal surface which forms behind the dam and solidifies more or less rapidly, according to the nature of the material. The concentrated evacuation of this mud, before its consolidation, through orifices at the bottom is particularly desirable as it corresponds to a desilting without loss of water.
