This master’s thesis studies the representation of Irish themes in the cartoons of a satirical British magazine Punch (1841–2002) during the Victorian Age. The aim of the study is to uncover how Irish themes were portrayed in the cartoons and to shed light on the historical factors that may have influenced the formation of these depictions. The data consists of 151 Victorian Age Punch cartoons that are studied by using iconography as a tool for examining and interpreting the contents of the cartoons. The cartoons are grouped together on the basis of the central themes and characteristics that were detected in them, and the analysis focuses on how these themes were represented.
