ABSTRACT.The aim of this paper is to analyze the secession in the United States. To do this, we will study the context in which the demands of territorial separation developed during the nineteenth century and the current secessionist claims of parties and social movements. Unlike what happens in other Western democracies, in the United States secession is now prohibited and beyond what people can decide politically. This is due to various legal and historical factors that have characterized its constitutionalism and federalism.RESUMEN.
