To increase capital efficiency and flexibility in networking, virtualization methods, following the concept of Network Function Virtualization (NFV), can be used. In NFV, network functions conventionally implemented on proprietary hardware appliances are migrated to Commercial OffThe-Shelf (COTS) hardware as software-implemented virtualized functions. This may come at the cost of performance, and some performance-critical functions may require the usage of specialized hardware as hardware accelerators.
