A Theological and Ethical Response to the Climate Change in the Light of the Biblical Covenant Tradition

The IPCC assessment of 2007 identifies the humanly produced gas emission as the most important cause of the global warming. It urges for a radical change in the present life style of human beings. Based on facts, this article brings out the responsibility of contemporary human life style, characterised by an individualist vision introduced by a globalizing market-economy, as one of the major factors for the destruction of the ecological system and climate change. After examining the hazards of the consumerist market economy’s impact, it situates climate change beyond its political, social and economic sphere and focuses on theological and ethical nuances. The present disaster of climate change is compared with the prophecy of Jeremiah who had foreseen the exile and interpreted it as an outcome of the heedless exploitation of the poor and the land. Jeremiah not only prophesised the forthcoming disaster, but also requested Israel to renew their life based on the covenantal tradition.
