The role of the Holy Spirit in Augustine's works against Julian of Aeclanum is, for the first time, systematically examined. The article pays attention to Christ's birth of the virgin and the Spirit, the role of the Spirit as giver of caritas and his crucial place in Christians' rebirth through baptism. Further, the article pays much attention to the importance of human beings' body as (imperfect) temple of the Spirit. The article concludes with a survey of the renewing power of the Spirit as developed by Augustine in this controversy.status: publishe
