Making Saints in Seventeenth-Century Viceroyalty of Peru. Political Representation, Creole Agency and Lettered Culture

El proceso de beatificación de Francisco Solano entre 1629 y 1675, el primero de reconocimiento oficial a un santo en el territorio del virreinato peruano, galvanizó a las instituciones y corporaciones más representativas de Lima por la importancia simbólica y política de la santidad contra-reformista. Fue también el primer proceso que enfrentó las regulaciones establecidas por el papado en 1634 para validar los procesos de santidad y por ello enfrentó dichas agencias locales con la institucionalidad romana de acuerdo al modelo propuesto por Burke para la forma en que se negocia y construye la santidad contra-reformista. Este trabajo prueba que dos niveles de negociación fueron los más contenciosos: los términos legales invocados para obviar las formalidades del proceso introducidas a partir de 1634 por Urbano VIII y la transformación iconográfica de los atributos de santidad de Solano desde el santo-patrono de la ciudad de Lima de 1630 hasta el evangelizador de indígenas como se presenta en la vera efigies de 1675. También se prueba que detrás de la propaganda a favor de la primera causa de santidad peruana existió un poderoso soporte intelectual y financiero de la elite criolla limeña.The beatification process of Francis Solanus between 1629 and 1675, the first official candidacy to sainthood in the territory of the Peruvian Viceroyalty, galvanized powerful institutional and corporate agendas in Lima due to the symbolic and political importance of the Counter-Reformation sainthood. It was additionally the first sainthood process to face the formal restrictions enforced by Pope Urban VIII in 1634. Because of that, tense negotiations between local power in Lima and the Roman Curia developed; a process that proves Peter Burke¿s thesis on how Counter-Reformation sainthood was built. This article demonstrates the difficulties that arose on two levels of such negotiation: the legal boundaries that creole lettered elites wanted to overcome in order to expedite the cause, and the iconographic changes from his depiction in 1630 as Lima¿s patron saint to the final vera efigies of 1675 as a preacher of indigenous heathens. That transformation was required to achieve the final boost for his beatification but also shows how sainthood was still a shifting notion, with room to negotiate its definition. The article also sheds light on the ways the powerful lettered creole elite of Lima supported, both intellectually and financially, Solano¿s sainthood.Área de Historia del Arte, UP
