La canonización es un procedimiento eclesial que confiere institucionalidad al culto que recibe un cristiano ejemplar fallecido con fama de santidad. Dicho procedimiento, inicialmente basado en la aclamación popular, terminó siendo una prerrogativa exclusiva del obispo de Roma.
