Revisión de los sistemas de gasificación de biomasa para la generación de energía en Costa Rica de 1982 a 2014

The development of the gasification in Costa Rica starts back in the 80s with the establishment of a gasification course arranged by the Latin American Organization of Energy (OLADE, by its Spanish acronym). Historically, the most commonly used biomass fuel for this process is wood waste, especially wood chips under 4 inches of length. In very few occasions, the use of other biomass fuels has been either implemented or studied in systems of gasification across the country. Due to the old age and the rudimentary character of the projects, the documentation and information related to them is rather scarce. The main experiences with gasification utilizing coffee bean skins as fuel, are from the Coffee Processing Plants of CoopeDota R.L. and CoopeTarrazú R.L. both plants developed this technology with very modest results due to the process unsteadiness, the generation of undesired compounds as tars and the emission of volatile organic compounds. On the other hand, there have been positive experiences with the gasification of the coffee husk. This material has simplified the design of gasifiers, given its low humidity content and particle size. Currently, the plants Cerro Los Vindas and Monte Rosa have both active coffee tusk gasifiers. From this review, the necessity of an in-depth examination of the physicochemical properties of the coffee skin becomes clear, as well as the evaluation of the thermodynamic behavior of the gasification process when using this biomass waste as fuel.El desarrollo de la gasificación en Costa Rica inicia en la década de los 80 con un curso de gasificación impartido por la Organización Latinoamericana de Energía (OLADE). Históricamente, el combustible biomásico más utilizado para este proceso consiste en residuos de madera, principalmente chips de madera de una longitud no mayor a las 4 pulgadas. En pocos casos se ha estudiado o puesto en marcha el uso de otros combustibles biomásicos en sistemas de gasificación a lo largo del país. Debido a la antigüedad y al carácter rudimentario de los proyectos, la documentación e información relacionada a estos trabajos es escasa. Las principales experiencias con sistemas de gasificación utilizando broza como combustible, se tienen en los Beneficios de CoopeDota R.L. y CoopeTarrazú R.L. Ambos Beneficios desarrollaron esta tecnología con resultados poco alentadores debido a la inestabilidad del proceso, la generación excesiva de compuestos indeseados como alquitranes y emisión de compuestos orgánicos volátiles al ambiente. Por otra parte, se han tenido experiencias positivas con la gasificación de la cascarilla de café. Este material ha facilitado el desarrollo de gasificadores debido a su bajo contenido de humedad y tamaño de partícula. Actualmente, en los Beneficios Cerro Los Vindas y Monte Rosa se encuentran activos dos gasificadores de cascarilla de café.A partir de esta revisión bibliográfica se hace evidente la necesidad de realizar un estudio profundo sobre las características fisicoquímicas de la broza de café, así como la evaluación del comportamiento termodinámico del proceso de gasificación al utilizar estos residuos biomásicos como combustibles
