In this article, the author refers to some of the main fields of research within the Ancient philosophy of music, and stresses that these philosophies do not have to be studied solely from a historical perspective. Many insights of the various Ancient philosophies of music have the potential for being of the utmost relevance for many contemporary reflections. This insight could be of particular importance for developing a detailed contemporary account of the relevance of the numerical ratios which have been upheld in the Pythagorean-Platonic tradition.
