An attempt at a solution of the problem of indeterminancy of ontology in Quine's philosophy

Punktem wyjścia niniejszej pracy jest powstały w filozofii Quine’a problem wyboru między dwoma różnymi, choć empirycznie równoważnymi teoriami. Nakłada się na to drugi problem: nawet jedna teoria logiczna może być spełnialna w wielu nieizomorficznych modelach. Problemy te rozpatrywane są na przykładzie arytmetyki Peano z racji jej prostoty i ugruntowanej tradycji badań nad jej nieizomorficznymi modelami. Okazuje się, że wyjście poza logikę klasyczną może eliminować modele niestandardowe. Podniesiony zostaje postulat swobodnego wyboru logiki i dostosowywania jej do wymagań badawczych. Propozycja ta zostaje skonfrontowana z podstawowymi zasadami filozofii Quine’a: kryteriami naturalizmu, pragmatyzmu i oszczędności. Ostatnie kryterium ściśle związane jest z teorią zobowiązań ontologicznych. Zaproponowana zostaje modyfikacja tej teorii przez przeniesienie zobowiązań ontologicznych z poziomu teorii na poziom modelu.The starting point of this paper is the problem of choice between two different, though empirically equivalent theories, which arises in Quine's philosophy. There is another problem overlapping: even one logical theory may be satisfiable in many non-isomorphic models. These problems are considered with regard to Peano arithmetic due to its simplicity and well-established tradition of investigating its non-isomorphic models. It turns out that going beyond classic logic may eliminate non-standard models. The postulate of free choice of logic and adapting it to research requirements is raised. This proposal is confronted with the basic principles of Quine's philosophy: criteria of naturalism, pragmatism, and economy. The last criterion is closely related to the theory of ontological commitments. The modification of this theory by transferring ontological commitments from theory level to model level is being proposed
