Punktem wyjścia niniejszej pracy jest powstały w filozofii Quine’a problem wyboru między dwoma różnymi, choć empirycznie równoważnymi teoriami. Nakłada się na to drugi problem: nawet jedna teoria logiczna może być spełnialna w wielu nieizomorficznych modelach. Problemy te rozpatrywane są na przykładzie arytmetyki Peano z racji jej prostoty i ugruntowanej tradycji badań nad jej nieizomorficznymi modelami. Okazuje się, że wyjście poza logikę klasyczną może eliminować modele niestandardowe. Podniesiony zostaje postulat swobodnego wyboru logiki i dostosowywania jej do wymagań badawczych.
