The level of emotional intelligence of nursing students and its impact on the choice of field of study, interests and degree of success in studies

Wstęp: Ocena poziomu inteligencji emocjonalnej studentów pielęgniarstwa jest bardzo istotna ze względu na zawód, który będą w przyszłości wykonywać. Od pielęgniarki/rza wymaga się aktualnej wiedzy teoretycznej i praktycznej, umiejętności współpracy z zespołem medycznym, a co najważniejsze zdolności nawiązywania kontaktu z pacjentami. Wysoki poziom inteligencji emocjonalnej sprzyja rozwijaniu tych kompetencji.Cel pracy: Celem badań było poznanie poziomu inteligencji emocjonalnej studentów pielęgniarstwa i jego wpływ na wybór kierunku studiów, zainteresowania i stopień powodzenia na studiach.Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto 265 studentów pielęgniarstwa Wydziału Nauk o Zdrowiu Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego Collegium Medicum. W badaniu zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego. Do zebrania danych wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Inteligencji Emocjonalnej (INTE) oraz autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Do analizy statystycznej wykorzystano test chi kwadrat, test U Manna-Whitneya, współczynnik korelacji Pearsona, rang Spearmana. W analizach statystycznych przyjęto poziom istotności p = 0,05. Wyniki przedstawiono graficznie (wykresy, tabele) oraz opisowo. Wyniki: Badana grupa charakteryzowała się niskim i przeciętnym poziomem inteligencji emocjonalnej. Na poziom inteligencji emocjonalnej miał wpływ poziom i rok studiów. Analiza statystyczna wykazała istotną, dodatnią zależność pomiędzy poziomem inteligencji emocjonalnej ankietowanych, a zamiarem ponownego wyboru tego samego kierunku studiów (Rho = 0,30; p < 0,001), wpływem studiowania pielęgniarstwa na rozwój zainteresowań (Rho = 0,27; p < 0,001), wpływem studiowania pielęgniarstwa na udział w konferencjach i pracach w kołach naukowych (Rho = 0,26; p < 0,001), zamiarem kontynuacji nauki na studiach drugiego stopnia (Rho = 0,44; p < 0,001).Wnioski: Poziom inteligencji badanych wzrasta wraz z poziomem i rokiem studiów. Poziom inteligencji badanych ma wpływ na stopień powodzenia na studiach, rozwój własnych zainteresowań, udział w konferencjach i pracach kołach naukowych, ponowny wybór tego samego kierunku studiów oraz zamiar kontynuacji na studiach drugiego stopnia.Introduction: Assessing the level of emotional intelligence of nursing students is very important because of the profession they will perform in the future. The nurse is required to have current theoretical and practical knowledge, the ability to cooperate with a medical team, and most importantly the ability to make contact with patients. A high level of emotional intelligence favors the development of these competences.Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to find out the level of emotional intelligence of nursing students and its impact on the choice of field of study, interest and degree of success in studies.Material and methods: The study covered 265 nursing students of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum. The study used the diagnostic survey method. To collect the data, the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (INTE) and the author's questionnaire were used. For statistical analysis, the chi square test, Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman rank were used. The statistical significance level was p = 0.05. The results are presented graphically (charts, tables) and descriptively.Results: The examined group was characterized by low and average level of emotional intelligence. The level of emotional intelligence was affected by the level and year of study. Statistical analysis showed a significant, positive relationship between the level of emotional intelligence of the respondents and the intention to re-select the same field of study (Rho = 0.30; p <0.001), the impact of nursing studying on the development of interests (Rho = 0.27; p <0.001), the impact of studying nursing on participation in conferences and works in scientific associations (Rho = 0.26; p < 0.001), with the intention of continuing education at second-cycle studies (Rho = 0.44; p < 0.001).Conclusions: The level of intelligence of the respondents increases with the level and year of study. The level of intelligence of respondents have an impact on the degree of success in college, develop their own interests, participation in conferences and the work of scientific circles, the re-election of the same field of study and the intention to continue studies of the second degree
