Rodzaj Vitex, należący do rodziny Lamiaceae, obejmuje 230 gatunków występujących w tropikalnych i subtropikalnych obszarach Europy Południowej, Afryki, Azji oraz Ameryki Północnej. Gatunkiem farmakopealnym jest Vitex agnus castus L. Wykorzystywany jest owoc niepokalanka zwyczajnego, standaryzowany na zawartość flawonoidu - kastycyny. Surowiec zawiera liczne metabolity wtórne m.in. flawonoidy, irydoidy i kwasy fenolowe. Wiele innych gatunków rodzaju Vitex jest również stosowanych w lecznictwie, a niektóre z nich także w kosmetologii.
