Średniowieczna architektura muzułmańska rozwijała się w zróżnicowanym środowisku kulturowym. Zwłaszcza procesy zachodzące w basenie Morza Śródziemnego, formowały budownictwo nowej religii. Niniejsza praca porusza problem genezy i kształtowania się zachodnioislamskiego typu minaretu. Ekspansja Arabów i proces islamizacji podbitych ziem, nie zrywały z lokalną tradycją budowlaną, odziedziczoną po późnym antyku, sztuce wczesnochrześcijańskiej i Cesarstwie Bizantyńskim. Niebagatelną rolę odegrały wieżowe pustelnie eremitów chrześcijańskich, fragmentarycznie zachowane dziś na terytorium Syrii.
