Western Islamic type of minarets in the 9th and 10th century. Genesis, form development and some comments about the function.

Średniowieczna architektura muzułmańska rozwijała się w zróżnicowanym środowisku kulturowym. Zwłaszcza procesy zachodzące w basenie Morza Śródziemnego, formowały budownictwo nowej religii. Niniejsza praca porusza problem genezy i kształtowania się zachodnioislamskiego typu minaretu. Ekspansja Arabów i proces islamizacji podbitych ziem, nie zrywały z lokalną tradycją budowlaną, odziedziczoną po późnym antyku, sztuce wczesnochrześcijańskiej i Cesarstwie Bizantyńskim. Niebagatelną rolę odegrały wieżowe pustelnie eremitów chrześcijańskich, fragmentarycznie zachowane dziś na terytorium Syrii. Przenikanie i oddziaływanie form następowało również za pośrednictwem władców i ich prestiżowych fundacji. W IX i X stuleciu zjawiska te stają się bardzo wyraźne, krystalizując charakterystyczną czworokątną wieżę minaretową, szeroko stosowana na zachodnich ziemiach islamu aż po czasy współczesne. Początków minaretów należy upatrywać we wczesnej architekturze muzułmańskiej Damaszku, Al-Kajrawanu i Kordowy. Charakterystycznymi elementami tych budowli są czworokątne, regularne plany, monumentalne formy, złożone z kilku wyodrębnionych brył, wewnętrzne, kręte klatki schodowe i wspólna technika murarska z dużych, dokładnie opracowanych bloków kamienia. Celem pracy jest zebranie czołowych tez badaczy o źródłach pochodzenia minaretu, nakreślenie sytuacji polityczno-geograficznej w omawianym okresie i przeanalizowanie wybranych przykładów minaretów z terenu Bliskiego Wschodu, wybrzeży północnej Afryki i Półwyspu Iberyjskiego. Kształtowanie się specyficznego typu minaretu spowodowane było również zmianami w jego funkcji. Od czysto użytkowej roli wieży do nawoływania na adhān, nabrał on znaczenia propagandowego i symbolicznego, jako oznaczenie terytorium pod panowaniem islamu. Inspiracje z architektury militarnej i sygnalizacyjnej nadawały całym meczetom dodatkowych alegorycznych treści, jako „zamków Boga”, miejsca obrony wiary muzułmańskiej.Medieval Muslim architecture flourished in a diverse cultural environment. The processes that were taking place in the Mediterranean Basin especially influenced the buildings associated with the new religion. This thesis elaborates on the problem of the genesis and formation of the western-islamic minaret type. Arab expansion and the process of islamization of the conquered lands did not detract the following building movement from the local tradition inherited from late antiquity, early Christian art and the Byzantine Empire. The hermitages of the Christian eremites fragmented in today's Syrian territory also played a significant role. Rulers and their prestigious foundations also contributed to the infiltration and influence of new architectural forms. In the 9th and 10th century these phenomena became very clear, crystallizing the characteristic quadrangular minaret tower, widely used in the western lands of Islam until the modern times. The origins of the minarets are to be found in the early Muslim architecture of Damascus, Kairouan and Córdoba. The characteristic features of these buildings are quadrangular, regular plans, monumental forms composed of several isolated masses, internal winding staircases, all built using common masonry technology that used large, well-developed stone blocks. The aim of this thesis is to gather the arguments of the leading researchers on the origins of the minaret and to analyse selected examples of minarets from the Middle East, North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula, basing on a political and geographical situation during the time period. The formation of a specific type of minaret was also caused by changes in its function. From the purely utilitarian role of the tower to the exhortation to adhān, it gained propagandist and symbolic meaning as a sign of territory under the rule of Islam. Visible inspirations from the military and signalling architecture also assigned additional, allegorical meaning to the mosques, seen as "castles of God" and place of defense of the Muslim faith
