Grzyby Candida albicans są oportunistycznymi mikroorganizmami wywołującymi groźne infekcje uogólnione u osób z osłabioną odpornością. Na różnorodnych powierzchniach, naturalnych lub sztucznych, tworzą one skomplikowane struktury wielokomórkowe zwane biofilmami. Do ważnych mechanizmów przyczyniających się do zwiększenia wirulencji C. albicans oprócz zdolności tworzenia biofilmu należy także fenotypowe przełączanie. Zjawisko to polega na zmianie fizjologii i fenotypu komórki w zależności od różnych warunków środowiskowych.
