Christian-Muslim relations in the West Bank after 1993 in the context of Israeli-Palestinian conflict from Christian perspective

Tematem pracy są przemiany w relacjach chrześcijan i muzułmanów na Zachodnim Brzegu Jordanu po 1993 roku. Głównym celem pracy było przedstawienie negatywnego wpływu konfliktu izraelsko-palestyńskiego na współżycie tych dwóch wspólnot oraz pokazanie tej sytuacji z perspektywy palestyńskich chrześcijan.Praca składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej z nich została przedstawiona charakterystyka palestyńskich chrześcijan żyjących na terenie Zachodniego Brzegu Jordanu. Rozdział zawiera krótką historię chrześcijaństwa w historycznej Palestynie z uwzględnieniem czasów najnowszych, tj. po utworzeniu Państwa Izrael. Pokazano, że wybuch konfliktu między Palestyńczykami a Państwem Izrael spowodował fale migracji i istotne zmiany w strukturze demograficznej społeczności chrześcijan, czego skutki widoczne są do dziś. Pierwsza część pracy prezentuje także najważniejsze problemy, z jakimi stykają się palestyńscy chrześcijanie. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono problemowi emigracji oraz jego przyczynom, z których wyróżniono niestabilną sytuację polityczną oraz wzrost ekstremizmu muzułmańskiego.Druga część pracy poświęcona została na przedstawienie kolejnych faz konfliktu palestyńsko-izraelskiego, który ze sporu między dwoma narodami przemienił się w konflikt między dwiema religiami. W tym rozdziale opisano rozwój i zmierzch idei palestyńskiego nacjonalizmu oraz spadek poparcia dla Organizacji Wyzwolenia Palestyny (i dominującej w OWP partii Fatah) na rzecz Islamskiego Ruchu Oporu (Hamasu). Jako przełomowy moment dla tych przemian wskazano niepowodzenie procesu pokojowego po Pierwszej Intifadzie i rozczarowanie nieudolnością palestyńskiego rządu wśród Palestyńczyków, które w konsekwencji doprowadziło do wygranej Hamasu w wyborach w 2006 roku. Wykazano, że klęska idei świeckiego państwa spowodowała marginalizację mniejszości chrześcijańskiej.Ostatnia, zasadnicza część pracy dotyczy relacji chrześcijan i muzułmanów po 1993 roku i zawiera przede wszystkim wypowiedzi członków chrześcijańskich Kościołów. W pierwszej kolejności przedstawione zostały przemiany tożsamości chrześcijan w okresie post-Oslo. Następnie zwrócono uwagę na dwie zasadnicze postawy chrześcijan wobec ich relacji z palestyńskimi muzułmanami: poczucie bycia zmarginalizowaną, dyskryminowaną mniejszością lub zaprzeczanie istnienia problemu w relacjach z muzułmanami. Zawarto wypowiedzi chrześcijan, którzy prezentują pierwszą z tych perspektyw, podkreślając pogarszające się relacje z muzułmańskimi rodakami, wskazując na przypadki dyskryminacji, braku szacunku dla chrześcijańskich miejsc świętych, a nawet prześladowania (także ze strony państwa). Przedstawiono także drugą postawę, którą cechują się zwłaszcza liderzy wspólnot chrześcijańskich, zwracając uwagę na Państwo Izrael jako główne źródło niepewnej sytuacji chrześcijan w Państwie Palestyna. W tej części pracy pokazano także rozbieżności wśród badaczy i konieczność krytycznego podejścia do źródeł, w których mogą się pojawiać manipulacje.Wnioski, które płyną z drugiej i trzeciej części pracy koncentrują się na wskazaniu przyczyn problemu w relacjach chrześcijańsko-muzułmańskich. Wskazano, że jego kontekstem jest konflikt izraelsko-palestyński, który w sposób negatywny wpływa na życie zarówno chrześcijan, jak i muzułmanów w Państwie Palestyna. Zauważono, że rozwój konfliktu oraz klęska procesu pokojowego z Oslo w dużej mierze spowodowały wzrost ekstremizmu i fundamentalizmu muzułmańskiego, co podzieliło palestyńskie społeczeństwo, dotąd zjednoczone wokół OWP. Podkreślono, że 1993 rok wyznacza moment rozłamu palestyńskiego społeczeństwa: muzułmanie zaczęli szukać rozwiązania konfliktu w skrajnie fundamentalistycznej formie religii, chrześcijanie natomiast zaangażowali się w metody walki non-violence.Praca przedstawia relacje chrześcijan i muzułmanów w szerokiej, wielostronnej perspektywie, prezentując temat w pogłębiony, a zarazem spójny sposób.The thesis’ subject are the transformations of Christian and Muslim relationship on the West Bank after 1993. The main purpose was showing the negative impact that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, having place for over a half of a century, has had on the coexistence of the two communities and presenting the situation from the point of view of Palestinian Christians. The thesis consists of three parts. The first one includes a characteristic of Palestinian Arabic Christians living on the West Bank. The chapter contains a brief history of Christianity in the historical Palestine, taking into consideration contemporary times, i.e. after the State of Israel was established. The chapter shows how the Palestinian-Israeli conflict breakout resulted in massive migration as well as key changes in terms of demographic structure of the Christian community. It also comments on the consequences that are still visible and have a significant impact on the current situation of the Christian community in Palestine. The first part also describes the problems faced by Palestinian Christians. Attention has been focused mostly on the problem of emigration, its reasons and most of all on the unstable political situation and the escalation of Muslim extremism.The second part has been devoted to the subsequent phases of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which transformed an argument between two nations into a conflict between two religions. The chapter describes the rise and fall of the idea of Palestinian nationalism and the loss of popular support for Palestine Liberation Organization (as well as for Fatah, a dominant PLO party) in favour of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). The failure of the peaceful process after the First Intifada as well as Palestinians being disappointed by the ineffectiveness of the Palestinian government has been presented as the turning point for said transformations. In consequence, it led to Hamas winning the 2006 elections. The thesis proves that the idea of a secular state has contributed to the Christian minority marginalisation. The final and fundamental chapter concerns the relationship between Christians and Muslims after 1993 and includes most of all the testimonies of Christian Churches members. Firstly, the changes in Christian identity in the post-Oslo period have been described. Secondly, two essential Christians’ attitudes towards their relationship with the Palestinian Muslims have been presented: the feeling of being a marginalised and discriminated minority or denying the problematic relationship with the Muslims. The chapter includes statements by Christians presenting the first attitude, who describe cases of discrimination, disrespect for their sacred places and even persecution (also done by the State). The other attitude, represented by the Christian community leaders, has also been described: they assume that the State of Israel is the main cause of the precarious situation of Christians living in the State of Palestine. It has been noted that the conflict escalation and the failure of the Oslo peaceful process led to the growth of Muslim extremism and fundamentalism, which divided the Palestinian society, till then united around PLO. It has been highlighted that year 1993 points the beginning of the Palestinian society rupture: the Muslims began to seek a solution to the conflict in an extremely fundamentalistic form of their religion, while the Christians became involved in non-violence methods.The thesis presents Christian-Muslim relationships in the West Bank in a varied way, showing many perspectives and points of view. It consists of diversified materials, in which there are interviews, testimonies and even non published materials
