N/AIn the face of struggling economies, growing nationalist sentiment, and calls for more locally centered democracy, the last decades have seen Euroscepticism grow in force across the European Union. The trend is particularly evident in the European Parliament where citizens have the opportunity to vent their frustrations directly through their choices in the quinquennial European parliamentary elections. The 2009 elections to the European Parliament witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of representatives hostile to the European project. The very visible presence of Eurosceptic MEPs represents a challenge to the chamber. In parliamentary studies, it is phenomenally rare for debate in an elected legislature to consider not just legislative outcomes but also the continued existence of the institution itself. This study concentrates on the contradiction that arises from the inclusion in the European Parliament of MEPs who are dedicated to its destruction or at the very least its serious reduction in size and power. It will focus on the behaviour of the MEPs of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group in the seventh European Parliament from 2009 to 2014. In 2009 this group represented 31 MEPS who shared a common aversion to European integration. This study considers Eurosceptic behaviour and interactions within the European Parliament and the wider Union. It draws conclusions on the degree to which EFD MEPs are able to influence their political environment and how they in turn are Europeanised by their experiences in the legislature
