Kisspeptyny są rodziną hormonów peptydowych kodowanych przez gen Kiss1/KISS1. Komórki wykazujące ekspresję tych neuropeptydów zlokalizowane są w wielu rejonach podwzgórza, w sąsiedztwie neuronów produkujących gonadoliberynę (GnRH). Kiss1r/KISS1R jest receptorem kisspeptyny sprzężonym z białkiem G i występuje on w komórkach, w których zachodzi synteza GnRH. Bezpośrednią funkcją kisspeptyny jest kontrolowanie układu podwzgórzowo – przysadkowego przez stymulowanie pulsacyjnego wydzielania GnRH, co zapewnia prawidłowe wejście w okres dojrzewania, jak również funkcjonowanie jąder, wypływając na procesy spermatogenezy i syntezy androgenów.
