ALEXANDRIA – THE CITY OF CAVAFY. Palimpsest as a metaphor of the city and the narrative structure in Lawrence Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet and Al-ḥayāt al-ṯānya li-Qusṭanṭīn Kafāfīs (The Second Life of Constantine Cavafy) by Ṭāriq Imām.

Praca magisterska stanowi analizę porównawczą dwóch powieści Kwartetu aleksandryjskiego Lawrence’a Durrella i w Drugiego życia Konstandinosa Kawafisa (Al-ḥayāt al-ṯānya li-Qusṭanṭīn Kafāfīs) Ṭāriqa Imāma. W toku wywodu autorka szczegółowo udowadnia trzy główne tezy pracy, a więc portret Aleksandrii jako miasta Kawafisa oraz palimpsestyczną strukturę zarówno narracji, jak i miasta, przyjmując wybrane teorie narracji oraz filozofię i socjologię miasta za główną metodologię badawczą.This thesis is a comparison of two novels: Lawrence Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet and Al-ḥayāt al-ṯānya li-Qusṭanṭīn Kafāfīs (The Second Life of Constantine Cavafy) by Ṭāriq Imām. The aim of the research is to prove three main statements: a portrait of Alexandria as the city of the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy; palimpsest as a leading metaphor of the city as well as a form of the narrative structure. During the analysis the autor uses contemporary theories of narration and philosophy and sociology of the city as the research methodology
